As the cold weather moves in each year, we need remember what we must do differently on our camp outs. Cold weather brings a different set of opportunities for fun, and challenges along the way. Please review all the material below and do your own personal research.
Basics
Layers, Layers, Layers! Do your research on layering for cold weather!
Keep dry clothes in zip locks or kitchen trash bags
Minimize cotton, especially outerwear (Avoid Blue Jeans, Tshirts, Socks) , instead use layers of synthetics.
Scarfs are great, keeps your face warm while still letting you breath. You can also get a Balaclava and a turtleneck
Good winter coat and a lighter jacket.
Winter Boots are a must. Tennis shoes are ok to bring for indoor adventures we may visit
Multiple pairs of Wool Socks
Long underwear
Waterproof gloves/mittens
Bring raingear, you never know, the weather can change quickly
Nightime headcover such as stocking cap
You will need a cold weather sleeping bag good rated for at least zero degrees. You can also purchase a liner to increase a sleeping bags efficiency.
Ensure you are using our 4 season tents, the Green ones where the rain-fly goes all the way to the ground
You must have a ground pad. The cold earth will pull heat away from you. It is very important to insulate yourself from the ground

Winter bedding described above
Basics: Personal First Aid Kit, Water Bottle, Matches/Lighter, Pocket Knife, Watch, Pencil and Paper, Scoutbook in Ziplock bag, 2 Trashbags, Compass, Sunglasses, Flashlight and Batteries, Emergency Blanket, Paracord, Whistle
Toiletries: Washcloth, Soap, Toothbrush and Paste, Comb, Toilet Paper, Lip Balm, SunScreen,
Do not breath into your sleeping bag, it will get wet and make you cold
Most heat is lost from head. Bring a 2nd dry stocking cap for night, or a hooded sweatshirt to keep your head warm and out of the sleeping bag
Dehydration can help cause hypothermia, drink 2-3 liters of water during the day.
Fill your Nagalene water bottle up with hot water and put into your sleeping bag to keep you warm all night
Physical activity warms you up. If cold, MOVE!
