Some of our camp outs will give you the opportunity to cook for yourself. This is referred to as backpack cooking, or self grub. This is a lot of fun and builds your confidence to be able to take care of yourself.
Below are some equipment tips, meal ideas, and rules you need to follow to ensure you are safe and have a great time.
The Troop will provide cold water for you to cook with
It is important for your Scout to do research and decide which equipment and meals best fits the adventure we are attending. Help your Scout be safe on the internet to learn about backpack camping and cooking.
Parents, to help your Scout learn, we do not share meals or to cook for our Scouts, unless there is a special circumstance that I have approved.
You can help a Scout understand how to use their equipment, but the STEP BACK and let them do it.
Let your Scouts practice at home with all the equipment and meals several times before the camp out

There are many types of Stoves on the market, all using different types of fuels. BSA FUEL RULES:. This from the Guide to Safe Scouting: “Recommended chemical fuels — white gas (Coleman fuel); kerosene; liquefied petroleum gas fuels, including propane, butane and isobutane; vegetable oil fuels; biodiesel fuel; and commercially prepared gelled-alcohol fuel in original containers.”
Amazon is a great resource! search for Backpack stoves. Stoves with windbreaks are a little bigger and cost a bit more, but you also don't have to worry about the wind. Walmart and Academy also sell backpacking stoves. You can also buy stove windbreaks on Amazon.
You can use a wood as fuel, but you will need to have a way to contain it. The troop will be building rocket stoves for our December campout, but for this on, you will need to come up with your own
Now that you have a stove, you will need something to cook your food in and a way to eat it. That is where the mess kit comes in. Amazon, Walmart, and Academy all have great mess kits. Once you get one, use it a few times at home, know your equipment and how to use it BEFORE the camp out.
